Learn about Fibroid and its treatment by laparoscopy in Simple Language
Gyne Laparoscopic Surgery / Feb 23rd, 2020 6:18 am     A+ | a-

This video explains in simple language about fibroid. Fibroids are benign tumors made of smooth muscle cells and fibrous connective tissue. They develop in the uterus. It is estimated that 70-80% of women will develop fibroids in their lifetime—however, not everyone will develop symptoms or require treatment. The most important characteristic of fibroids is that they are not cancer, and they do not have the potential to become cancer. Because of that, it is reasonable for women without symptoms to opt for observation rather than treatment. Studies show us that fibroids grow at different rates, even in the same woman, and can range from the size of a pea to the size of a watermelon.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or on a woman’s uterus. They are also called uterine fibroids or leiomyomas. Fibroids are very common and often appear during the childbearing years. While some women may not experience any symptoms, others may face problems that affect their daily life.

What Are the Symptoms of Fibroids?

Fibroids can cause:

Heavy or prolonged periods

Pelvic pain or pressure

Frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder

Pain during sexual intercourse

Swelling or a feeling of fullness in the lower abdomen

Rarely, fertility problems

The symptoms depend on the size, location, and number of fibroids.

Causes of Fibroids

The exact cause of fibroids is not fully known, but several factors may play a role:

Hormones: Estrogen and progesterone can promote fibroid growth

Genetics: Family history may increase risk

Other factors: Obesity, age, and certain lifestyle factors

Treatment of Fibroids

Not all fibroids need treatment. If they are small and symptom-free, doctors may suggest regular monitoring. However, if fibroids cause discomfort or health problems, treatment may be needed.

Laparoscopic Fibroid Surgery (Minimally Invasive)

Laparoscopy is a modern, minimally invasive surgical technique to remove fibroids. Instead of a large open surgery, surgeons use:

Small incisions

A laparoscope (a thin tube with a camera)

Special surgical instruments

Advantages of laparoscopic treatment:

Less pain after surgery

Smaller scars

Faster recovery and shorter hospital stay

Less risk of infection

Laparoscopy can be used to remove fibroids while preserving the uterus, which is especially helpful for women who wish to have children in the future.

Conclusion

Fibroids are common, but with modern techniques like laparoscopic surgery, they can be treated safely and effectively. Early diagnosis and proper treatment can help women relieve symptoms and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
