This video demonstrate IPOM Inguinal Hernia by Dr. R. K. Mishra at World Laparoscopy Hospital. Inguinal Hernia Laparoscopic Surgery is commonly also called as Minimal Invasive Surgery is method of choice and IPOM technique is increasing. Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Surgery is one of the most common minimal access surgery performed in the world. This Inguinal Hernia Surgery is done under General Anesthesia and Laparoscopic Hernia Surgeon makes 3-4 keyholes of nearly 0.5 to 1 cm. near the groins to perform IPOM inguinal hernia surgery. With the help of Laparoscopic instruments Surgeons pushes the tissue back into abdomen and repair the hernia by Mesh. In IPOM Laparoscopic Hernia surgery special mesh made for intraperitoneal application is used. Tacker or suture then uses a Surgical Mesh to hold the tissues back to its normal position. A tackers is used to hold the mesh at its position. Patient is discharged the next day because there are no stitches and no cuts.

IPOM Inguinal Hernia Repair: Advanced Minimally Invasive Surgery by Dr. R. K. Mishra

Inguinal hernia is one of the most common surgical conditions affecting adults worldwide. Traditionally, inguinal hernia repair involved open surgery, which required larger incisions, longer recovery times, and higher risks of complications. However, modern advancements in minimally invasive surgery have revolutionized the approach to hernia repair, and IPOM (Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh) inguinal hernia repair is emerging as an effective and safe option.

What is IPOM Inguinal Hernia Repair?

IPOM, or Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh, is a laparoscopic technique in which a synthetic mesh is placed inside the abdominal cavity directly over the hernia defect. Unlike conventional open surgery, IPOM uses small incisions, a camera, and specialized instruments to repair the hernia without extensive tissue disruption.

The procedure is particularly useful in recurrent hernias, bilateral hernias, or cases where traditional approaches may be challenging.

How IPOM Works

The IPOM procedure follows these steps:

  1. Laparoscopic Access: Small keyhole incisions are made in the abdomen, through which a laparoscope and surgical instruments are inserted.

  2. Hernia Identification: The hernia sac and surrounding structures are carefully visualized.

  3. Reduction of Hernia Sac: The herniated tissue is gently pushed back into the abdominal cavity.

  4. Mesh Placement: A specially designed mesh is placed over the defect inside the peritoneal cavity. The mesh is secured using sutures or tacks, providing strong reinforcement.

  5. Closure and Recovery: The small incisions are closed, and patients typically experience less postoperative pain and a faster return to normal activities.

Advantages of IPOM Inguinal Hernia Repair

  • Minimally Invasive: Small incisions reduce postoperative pain and scarring.

  • Faster Recovery: Most patients can resume daily activities within a few days.

  • Lower Recurrence Rate: The mesh provides strong reinforcement, reducing the risk of hernia recurrence.

  • Safe for Complex Cases: Ideal for recurrent or bilateral hernias.

  • Reduced Complications: Lower risk of infection and chronic groin pain compared to open surgery.
