What is Ovarian Cyst and how can it be treated?
Gyne Laparoscopic Surgery / Feb 23rd, 2020 6:21 am     A+ | a-

In this episode of Doctor's Talk we discuss what is an Ovarian Cyst, what are its symptoms and how can we cure it using Laparoscopic measures. Around 10 million cases of Ovarian Cyst are observed in India every year and is one of the leading complications of the female reproductive system. It can be cured through contraceptive pills or by Laparoscopic Surgery. If left untreated menstrual irregularities, pain during intercourse or irregular bowel movements are some of the symptoms that may occur.

Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that develop on or inside the ovaries. They are a common gynecological condition and can affect women of all ages, though they are most frequent during the reproductive years. While many ovarian cysts are harmless and resolve on their own, some can cause discomfort or lead to serious complications if left untreated.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

Ovarian cysts can vary in type and cause:

Functional Cysts: These are the most common and form during the menstrual cycle. They include:

Follicular cysts: Form when a follicle doesn’t release an egg and continues to grow.

Corpus luteum cysts: Develop after the follicle releases an egg and seals off.

Pathological Cysts: These are less common and may require medical attention. They include:

Dermoid cysts: Contain tissue such as hair, skin, or teeth.

Cystadenomas: Filled with watery or mucous material.

Endometriomas: Result from endometriosis and contain menstrual blood.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

Many ovarian cysts are asymptomatic and discovered during routine check-ups. However, symptoms may occur if the cyst grows large or ruptures:

Pelvic pain or pressure

Bloating or abdominal swelling

Pain during intercourse

Irregular menstrual cycles

Frequent urination or difficulty emptying the bladder

Nausea or vomiting (in severe cases)

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of ovarian cysts can vary, but common contributing factors include:

Hormonal imbalance

Pregnancy

Endometriosis

Severe pelvic infections

Previous history of ovarian cysts

Diagnosis

Ovarian cysts are typically diagnosed through:

Pelvic examination

Ultrasound imaging

CT scan or MRI (in complex cases)

Blood tests (to check for hormone levels or tumor markers)

Treatment Options

The treatment of ovarian cysts depends on the type, size, and symptoms:

Watchful Waiting: Many functional cysts resolve naturally within a few menstrual cycles. Doctors may recommend regular monitoring with ultrasounds.

Medication: Hormonal contraceptives can help regulate the menstrual cycle and prevent the formation of new cysts.

Surgery: Surgical intervention may be needed if the cyst is large, persistent, painful, or suspicious for cancer. Laparoscopic surgery is the preferred minimally invasive technique, offering:

Smaller incisions

Reduced pain

Faster recovery

Shorter hospital stay

Lifestyle Measures: Maintaining a healthy weight, exercising regularly, and managing hormonal conditions can help reduce the risk of cyst formation.

When to See a Doctor

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience:

Sudden, severe abdominal or pelvic pain

Fever, vomiting, or dizziness

Rapid abdominal swelling

Signs of internal bleeding

Conclusion

Ovarian cysts are a common condition that can often be managed effectively, especially with early diagnosis. Functional cysts may resolve on their own, while complex cysts may require medical or surgical treatment. Laparoscopic surgery has become the gold standard for treating ovarian cysts, offering safe and efficient care with minimal recovery time.
