Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy which is a popular Bariatric Surgery for morbid obesity. Sleeve gastrectomy is a simpler bariatric operation than the gastric bypass procedure for morbid obesity because it does not involve rerouting of or reconnection of the intestines. The sleeve gastrectomy, unlike the Lap-band, does not require the use of a banding device to be implanted around a portion of the stomach. Laparoscopic Sleeve gastrectomy is a surgical weight-loss procedure in which the stomach is reduced to about 15% of its original size, by surgical removal of a large portion of the stomach along the greater curvature. The sleeve gastrectomy, by reducing the size of the stomach, allows the patient to feel full after eating less and taking in fewer calories. The surgery removes that portion of the stomach that produces a hormone that can makes a patient feel hungry.

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG) has become one of the most popular bariatric procedures worldwide for effective and sustainable weight loss. With advancements in minimally invasive surgery, patients can now benefit from a safer, faster, and more precise surgical approach. Today, we break down a step-by-step video explanation of this transformative procedure to give you a clear understanding of how it works.

What is Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy?

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is a minimally invasive surgery designed to help patients with obesity achieve weight loss. During the procedure, a large portion of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow, tube-shaped “sleeve” that limits food intake and reduces hunger hormones, promoting effective weight loss.

Step-by-Step Explanation of the Surgery

The video guide of LSG typically shows the surgery in sequential steps:

1. Preoperative Preparation

  • The patient is positioned on the operating table.

  • General anesthesia is administered.

  • The abdominal area is sterilized to minimize infection risk.

  • Small incisions (usually 5–6) are made in the abdomen for inserting laparoscopic instruments.

2. Creating Access to the Stomach

  • Carbon dioxide gas is used to inflate the abdomen, creating space for better visibility.

  • A laparoscope, a small camera, is inserted through one of the incisions to provide a live view of the stomach on the video monitor.

3. Dissection and Mobilization of the Stomach

  • The surgeon carefully separates the greater curvature of the stomach from surrounding tissues.

  • Special attention is given to preserving essential blood vessels while preparing the stomach for resection.

4. Stomach Resection (Sleeve Formation)

  • A stapling device is introduced to divide the stomach.

  • Around 75–80% of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow tube-shaped stomach (sleeve).

  • The stapler ensures the sleeve is sealed securely to prevent leaks.

5. Inspection and Leak Test

  • The newly formed sleeve is examined for proper shape and tightness.

  • A leak test may be performed using dye or air to ensure the staple line is secure.

6. Closure and Recovery

  • The laparoscopic instruments are removed.

  • The small incisions are closed with sutures or surgical glue.

  • The patient is monitored in the recovery room before moving to the ward.

Benefits of Watching a Step-by-Step LSG Video

  • Enhanced Understanding: Visual demonstration makes complex surgical steps easier to grasp.

  • Patient Awareness: Patients gain confidence and clarity about the procedure.

  • Educational Resource: Medical students and surgical trainees can learn surgical techniques efficiently.

  • Minimally Invasive Approach: Shows how small incisions reduce recovery time, pain, and complications.

Conclusion

Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy is a life-changing procedure for individuals struggling with obesity. Step-by-step videos provide an excellent way to understand the meticulous process involved, from preparation to post-operative care. With expert guidance and modern laparoscopic techniques, patients can achieve safe and effective weight loss with minimal recovery time.
