What is Hernia? Its causes and treatment using Laparoscopy
In this episode of Doctor's Talk we discuss with Dr. R K Mishra about Hernia. A hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall through which internal organs protrude. A hernia can occur in anyone of any gender or age group. Sometimes even in newborns a hernia is detected called Congenital Hernia. More than 1 million (10 lakh) cases of hernia are observed in India every year. It can be treated by Open surgery or Laparoscopy but the laparoscopic procedure provides many advantages compared to traditional open surgery.
A hernia occurs when an organ or fatty tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. The most common types of hernias include inguinal (groin), femoral, umbilical, and hiatal hernias. Hernias can cause discomfort, pain, or serious complications if left untreated.
Causes of Hernia
Hernias develop due to a combination of muscle weakness and strain. Common causes include:
Heavy lifting: Lifting heavy objects without proper technique can strain the abdominal wall.
Chronic coughing or sneezing: Conditions like chronic bronchitis increase pressure on the abdomen.
Obesity: Excess body weight puts additional pressure on weak spots in muscles.
Pregnancy: Pregnancy can stretch and weaken abdominal muscles.
Aging: Muscle and tissue naturally weaken with age.
Previous surgeries: Surgical incisions can create weak spots, leading to incisional hernias.
Genetics: Some people are born with weak abdominal walls, making them prone to hernias.
Symptoms of Hernia
Common signs of a hernia include:
A noticeable bulge or lump in the abdomen or groin
Pain or discomfort, especially while bending, coughing, or lifting
Weakness or pressure in the affected area
In severe cases, nausea, vomiting, or constipation, indicating complications
Treatment of Hernia Using Laparoscopy
Laparoscopic hernia repair is a minimally invasive surgical technique that uses small incisions, a camera, and specialized instruments to repair the hernia.
Advantages of Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery:
Smaller incisions, resulting in minimal scarring
Less postoperative pain compared to open surgery
Faster recovery and shorter hospital stay
Lower risk of infection and complications
Ability to repair bilateral hernias simultaneously
Procedure Overview:
The surgeon makes small incisions near the hernia site.
A laparoscope (camera) is inserted to provide a clear view of the hernia and surrounding tissues.
The protruding tissue is pushed back into place.
A mesh is often placed to reinforce the abdominal wall and prevent recurrence.
Incisions are closed, and the patient is monitored during recovery.
Recovery After Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery
Most patients can return to normal activities within a week, while heavy lifting or strenuous activities should be avoided for 4–6 weeks. Pain and discomfort are usually minimal and manageable with medications prescribed by the surgeon.
Conclusion
Hernias are a common condition, but with modern laparoscopic techniques, they can be treated safely and effectively. If you notice a bulge, pain, or discomfort in your abdomen or groin, it’s essential to consult a surgeon promptly. Laparoscopic hernia repair offers a faster recovery, less pain, and better cosmetic results compared to traditional open surgery.
