Laparoscopic Spatula
Gen Laparoscopic Surgery / Feb 25th, 2019 7:10 am     A+ | a-

This video demonstrate Laparoscopic Spatula which is a Curved Laparoscopic Electrode. It can be used for monopolar cutting as well as fulgration. Fulgration of endometriosis as well as gallbladder bed during cholecystectomy can be done with Spatula Curved Laparoscopic Electrode.

The laparoscopic spatula is a commonly used electrosurgical instrument in minimally invasive surgery. It plays a vital role in tissue dissection, coagulation, and precise surgical maneuvers. Due to its versatility and safety, the laparoscopic spatula has become an indispensable tool for general surgeons, gynecologists, and urologists performing laparoscopic procedures.

Design and Structure

A laparoscopic spatula typically consists of a long insulated shaft with a flat, spatula-shaped metallic tip. The length of the instrument usually ranges from 33 to 45 cm, allowing easy access to deep abdominal and pelvic cavities through trocars. The flat tip ensures controlled energy delivery while minimizing unintended tissue damage. It is compatible with monopolar electrosurgical units.

Working Mechanism

The laparoscopic spatula functions using monopolar electrosurgery. Electrical current passes from the spatula tip to the targeted tissue, enabling precise cutting and coagulation. The flat surface allows uniform energy distribution, making it ideal for superficial dissection and hemostasis. Surgeons can alternate between cutting and coagulation modes depending on the surgical requirement.

Clinical Applications

The laparoscopic spatula is widely used in various procedures, including:

  • Laparoscopic cholecystectomy for gallbladder dissection

  • Hernia repair for peritoneal flap creation

  • Gynecological surgeries such as hysterectomy and endometriosis excision

  • Adhesiolysis and tissue separation

  • Hemostasis of small bleeding vessels

Its precision makes it particularly useful in delicate anatomical areas.

Advantages

  • Precise tissue dissection with minimal thermal spread

  • Effective hemostasis

  • Reduced blood loss

  • Lower risk of tissue charring compared to needle electrodes

  • Easy handling and ergonomic design

These benefits contribute to safer surgeries and improved patient outcomes.

Safety Considerations

Proper insulation of the shaft is essential to prevent accidental burns. Surgeons must inspect the instrument before use for insulation failure. Appropriate power settings should be used to avoid excessive thermal injury. Awareness of capacitive coupling and proper grounding is critical when using monopolar devices.

Maintenance and Sterilization

Laparoscopic spatulas should be cleaned immediately after use to prevent tissue adherence. They can be sterilized using standard methods such as autoclaving or low-temperature plasma sterilization, depending on manufacturer recommendations. Regular inspection ensures long-term performance and safety.

Conclusion

The laparoscopic spatula is a fundamental electrosurgical instrument that enhances precision and efficiency in minimally invasive surgery. Its flat design, controlled energy delivery, and versatility make it a preferred choice for surgeons worldwide. Mastery of its use, combined with strict safety practices, contributes significantly to successful laparoscopic outcomes.
