Laparoscopic Scissors
Gen Laparoscopic Surgery / Feb 25th, 2019 6:03 am     A+ | a-

This is a video demonstration of Laparoscopic Scissors by Dr R K Mishra. Learning the functionality of scissors is very important and there are different type of scissors which has different uses.

Laparoscopic scissors are one of the most fundamental and frequently used instruments in minimally invasive surgery. Designed specifically for laparoscopic and robotic procedures, these scissors allow surgeons to cut tissues with high precision through small incisions, minimizing trauma and enhancing patient recovery.

Design and Structure

Laparoscopic scissors are long, slender instruments typically ranging from 30 to 45 cm in length, allowing access to deep operative fields through trocar ports. They consist of three main components: the handle, shaft, and cutting blades. The blades may be straight, curved, or hook-shaped, depending on the surgical requirement. Many modern laparoscopic scissors are insulated to permit safe use with electrosurgical energy.

Types of Laparoscopic Scissors

Several types of laparoscopic scissors are used in different procedures:

  • Straight scissors: Ideal for precise cutting and dissection.

  • Curved scissors: Provide better visualization and access around structures.

  • Hook scissors: Commonly used in gynecologic and general laparoscopic surgeries for sharp dissection.

  • Metzenbaum laparoscopic scissors: Designed for delicate tissue handling.

  • Electrosurgical scissors: Allow simultaneous cutting and coagulation, reducing blood loss.

Role in Laparoscopic Surgery

Laparoscopic scissors play a crucial role in tissue dissection, division of adhesions, opening of peritoneum, and trimming sutures or mesh. Their precision enables surgeons to work safely around vital structures such as blood vessels, nerves, and organs. In hernia repair, for example, laparoscopic scissors are essential for peritoneal incision and mesh shaping.

Advantages

The use of laparoscopic scissors offers several benefits:

  • Reduced tissue trauma due to precise cutting

  • Enhanced control and accuracy

  • Compatibility with electrosurgical systems

  • Improved ergonomics for surgeon comfort

  • Faster patient recovery with minimal scarring

Care and Maintenance

Proper handling, cleaning, and sterilization are vital to maintain the performance and longevity of laparoscopic scissors. The blades should be regularly inspected for sharpness and insulation integrity to prevent unintended thermal injury during surgery.

Conclusion

Laparoscopic scissors are indispensable tools in minimally invasive surgery, supporting safe, efficient, and precise surgical performance. Mastery of their use is a core skill for every laparoscopic surgeon, contributing significantly to successful surgical outcomes and improved patient care.
