Introduction

First, it is very important to understand what laparoscopy surgery is. So what exactly is laparoscopy? Laparoscopy has been defined in various words, here I will define laparoscopy as a modern surgical diagnostic procedure where operations are performed by making small incisions in the body.

This procedure is mostly carried out on the organs inside the abdomen. Laparoscopic surgery is regarded as a low risk procedure and therefore it has been widely adopted across the globe. When this procedure is carried on patients the healing takes faster than the other procedures. Laparoscopy can actually be done as an outpatient procedure.

Laparoscopic surgeons use an instrument known as the laparoscope to conduct laparoscopy. This procedure cannot take place without this instrument, therefore laparoscope is a very key element in laparoscopy.
Significance of Hands-on Training in laparoscopic surgery.

Due to its effectiveness, surgeons all over the worlds started to embrace this new technique, however, very few individuals have the knowledge and experience to conduct the procedure. This has led to the need of adequate training programs in some of the institutions to ensure efficacy and great effectiveness of laparoscopy it is important to develop training programs for all the practitioners.

Surgeons who are acquainted to open surgery might find it difficult to learn the laparoscopic skills. Open surgery is so different from the laparoscopic surgery since laparoscopic surgery does not involve direct vision and direct touching of the tissues. You need to learn some good laparoscopic skills to conduct the procedure successfully.

Hands-on training is a learning program where you get to use your hands and body to perform a procedure. The objective of this training is to make learning very practical and as realistic as possible. You get to interact with the instruments and perform the laparoscopic procedure on animals which are easier to operate on.

The best skills in laparoscopic should be acquired by hands-on training. These skills are a bit difficult and thus they should not be acquired over an analysis of a written text. To become a very competent laparoscopic surgeon you need to learn undergo comprehensive hands-on training.

Let’s immerse ourselves into the importance hands-on training in order to become a laparoscopic surgeon.

Increase in competence
Intensive hands-on training program is very important to anyone aspiring to become a competent laparoscopic surgeon. In the whole training program every individual is required to do the self-practice which on animals. The program should be very interactive among the students and the mentors. Self-practice is an effective and memorable way to gain and consolidate the knowledge and skills acquired. The hands-on training is a great way to increase productivity since you will also be able to monitor the small innovations that happen in laparoscopy.

Laparoscopic surgery is becoming very popular and may become the general surgery procedure. Laparoscopic surgery is a very minimal invasive procedure and has greatly shortened the period of convalescence. It is also not painful and less bleeding is involved unlike the general open surgery. Due to these positive properties laparoscopic surgery will soon become the most used surgery technique. Laparoscopy is an evolving technique with different instruments, hands-on training program is high demand since it is the only way to effectively learn how to use them. There is need to stay ahead with this evolving technique to avoid being locked out in the near future.

The traditional learning of laparoscopy is not enough to master the essential concepts and this may lead to operational complications. The hands-on training program will is a sure way to develop concrete skills under the supervision of a person with laparoscopic skills expertise. As this technique becomes popular acquiring the best skills through hands-on training will ease the burden of laparoscopic surgeons on the patients who need laparoscopic surgery. Hands-on training when it is conducted well it will provide the right motivation for future laparoscopic activities in its bid to replace open surgery.

Improves control skills

Laparoscopic surgery requires high level accuracy to avoid complication in the operation. Hands-on training course is a good way to improve your control skills as well as the hand-eye coordination. The hands-on training program is candidate-centred since you get to work with the instruments, educational devices and highly experienced virtual trainers. These kind of training as expanded the spectrum of training and students are able to stay informed about the latest technology which makes laparoscopic procedure easier and simple to perform.

The hands-on training skills in basic laparoscopic skills is very necessary for anyone who wants to become a laparoscopic surgeon. Your mastery of instrument handling gets to be enhanced as well as the pattern cutting.

Hands-on training provides a safe learning environment

Hands-on training programs involves the use of simulations. These simulations are known to stage some challenges when used in real life. In surgery challenges that are presented by the use of simulation can cause mistakes that can lead to bad complications to patients. However, the hands-on training program provides a safe environment since you are trained to use simulations and in the process you are able to identify the challenges that can be posed by them. When the student will get into the real job he/she will be very much aware of the challenges that they may face. When you are aware of the challenges that you might face, you will be able to a large extent prevent the occurrence of mistakes that could cost you a lot. Hands-on training program also provide you with a safe environment to try new things without affecting the lives of others.

Faster learning

Hands-on training accelerates learning, learning skills become much faster when you don’t focus on the theory itself too much. Doing things on your own makes you experience what you are learning, thus accelerates learning.
Hands-on training is actually experimental learning, it teaches you to do something on your own based on what you have learned. This is the best learning method for aspiring laparoscopic surgeons for it is able to have a major positive impact on the student’s mind-set when learning how to use laparoscopic instruments.

Brings theory and practice together
Learning laparoscopy involves a lot of theory, a laparoscopic student cannot be said to be fully prepared to conduct the laparoscopic activities if he/she didn’t do adequate practice. Hands-on training program enables the learning to beyond the realm of theory to conducting practical which enables the trainee achieve a first-hand experience on what is in theory.
Hands-on training can also be referred to as learning by doing, and this plays a very important role in laparoscopic learning as a way to retain concepts and knowledge.

Hands-on training promotes engagement

Learning with and from each other plays an important role in the success of a laparoscopic student. Hands-on training provides the best ground for engagement between a student and an instructor and also interactions among students. These engagement is very beneficial for the students since they are all involved in the problem solving process and are able to brainstorm to come up with new ideas.

The handling and use of instruments is made easier when there are healthy interactions among the students and also between the student and the instructor. In general hands-on training program makes learning easy and very beneficial to the students.

Improves aptitude
Hands-on training is crucially important for laparoscopic skills learning. As aforementioned, during hands-on training program the engagement levels are increased. The engagement are the student-instructor interactions and student-student interactions. Among the students there might be one or some who have a lower aptitude and other might possess very high levels of aptitude. The aptitude can be in regards to depth of perception, psychomotor ability and visual-spatial ability. Those with lower aptitude might feel challenged by those with a high one. This may lead to improvement in their aptitude.

Conclusion

Extensive learning is required for aspiring laparoscopic surgeons since they will be using laparoscopic surgical systems. Hands-on training program provides the trainee with a more realistic learning environment where he is able to put into practice the theory that he is taught by the instructor. Challenges can be identified during the training program and this would be the best way to avoid mistakes in the real-life performance of the laparoscopic procedure. Some human errors which occur during laparoscopic surgery can cause very bad patient injuries and sometimes even death.

There is need for experimental learning because laparoscopic surgical systems require adequate skills and knowledge to operate the laparoscopic instruments in which some require a three-dimensional operating field. Effective hand-eye coordination is highly required to make a competent laparoscopic surgeon. Other basic and highly relevant technical skills should be learned in a very effective and efficient manner.

Earlier the learning curve was steep for laparoscopic training, nowadays the advancements in technology has shortened this learning curve. However laparoscopic training is required to acquire adequate knowledge and skills and to have them retained in the memory. Soon the laparoscopic surgical technique will completely replace the open surgery and with highly skilled laparoscopic surgeons the process will be much better.
