Research of seven,424 privately insured colon cancer patients found that managed care presence on the market and hospital competition increased the likelihood laparoscopic surgery to treat colon cancer lowered costs, a national team of researchers led by a professor at the George Washington University School of Public Health insurance and Health Services reported within the journal Cancer, May 8, 2012.

The World Association of Laparoscopic Surgeons (WALS) has been created under the Societies of Registration Act, 1860, in order to put greater focus on this important branch of surgery and help in its growth. The WALS also endevours to promote education, training and research.  The WALS has held several camps and organized Two International Congresses on “Recent Advances in Minimal Access Surgery” in collaboration with Capt Ayush Purusartha Foundation (CAPF) on March 14-16, 2008 and February 14-15, 2010 in New Delhi.   In today's operating rooms, there are two or three surgeons, an anesthesiologist and several nurses, all needed for even the simplest of surgeries. Most surgeries require nearly a dozen people in the room. As with all automation, surgical robots will eventually eliminate the need for some personnel. Taking a glimpse into the future, surgery may require only one surgeon, an anesthesiologist and one or two nurses. In this nearly empty operating room, the doctor sits at a computer console without ergonomical stressed condition, either in or outside the operating room, or may be in another city using the surgical robot to accomplish what it once took a crowd of people to perform.

The World Laparoscopy Hospital has fellowship positions in robotic-assisted surgery and research for physicians who have not undergone a robotic training during their surgical, gynecological and urology residency but are interested in pursuing a career in robotic surgery. Clinical fellows participate in robotic-assisted surgery, develop laparoscopic and minimally invasive surgical skills, participate in pre- and postoperative patient care, attend clinic, participate in our weekly conferences. Fellows are expected to pursue clinical research projects with supervision from the senior staff.
