Dear Sir,

I have taken training at World Laparoscopy Hospital in March 2010. What do you think about laparoscopic training box? Do you believe it is useful during learning advanced laparoscopic skills? I did not train on a professional training box which is available in market. I recently trained on a home made very basic laparoscopic surgery training box. It was useful for me. But I want to learn about professional training box and virtual reality simulator. Is it worth to pay? Especially for advanced laparoscopic skills.

Dear Dr. Jean Devroye

Various devices are used and sold in market to aid in the education of laparoscopic skills ranging from simple box trainers to sophisticated virtual reality trainers. Various devices ranging from simple self made box trainers, animal models to sophisticated virtual reality trainers are used to aid in this education of laparoscopic skills.

Learning suturing and knotting is very good on a basic training box. I don't think that a big expense on virtual reality training box could guarantee a good surgeon! I insist and train each and every laparoscopic trainee of mine on Laparoscopic Training Box. It is just not only for developing Hand Eye coordination but it is absolute necessity to learn suturing and knotting skills with out which one cannot go to advanced Lap surgery.

Short-term, intensive, focused fellowship course of World Laparoscopy Hospital does improve laparoscopic skills of trainees but after Hands On training box-trainers can be used to change the present day didactic training into objective and competency-based. At least 2 hour practice twice a week provide an inexpensive and effective way of objective assessment of performance of laparoscopic skills.

Locally manufactured laparoscopic box-trainer is very effective contains a board placed in a black training box fitted with rubber gaskets to accommodate cannulae for the scope and tools. You can use simple leather a piece of meat of rubber pad to practice suturing and knotting. The finger of inflated Gloves can be tied by extracorporeal knots to practice appendectomy. Bowel anastomosis can be practice by anastomosing a loop of chicken intestine kept inside training box.

Laparoscopic trainers have been turned out to be effective to enhance skills of laparoscopic surgery; they may be usually installed at hospital inside the surgical department with limited access hours, usually inconvenient towards the schedule of the surgical and gynecological resident. Simple laparoscopic trainer boxes are necessary for residents who desire developing their skills in your house independently to the venue and hours of surgical departments.

You can make laparoscopic trainer yourself and bring the laparoscopic trainer to the desktop of your surgical resident through making it very light, secure, small, easy and cheap to construct.

It can be open to any personal budget and will be constructed having a minimum of hand skill. It can be small and light enough to permit its daily use on the desktop from the resident for two hours, then after it may be stocked anywhere. Regular training will improve the skill.

On YouTube if you will search you will find many videos explaining "How to make a laparoscopic training Box". It is very easy with one webcam and one LED light to make a trainer box to learn laparoscopic skill.
