This education video of IPOM is demonstrated in order to assess the feasibility of laparoscopic intraperitoneal onlay mesh (IPOM) hernia repair as an alternative method for inguinal hernia repair.

Inguinal hernia is one of the most common surgical conditions worldwide, affecting millions of people every year. With the advancement of minimal access surgery, laparoscopic techniques have transformed the management of hernias by providing faster recovery, less pain, and better cosmetic outcomes. One of the evolving techniques in laparoscopic hernia repair is IPOM (Intraperitoneal Onlay Mesh) inguinal hernia repair, which is demonstrated and taught by Dr. R. K. Mishra at World Laparoscopy Hospital, a globally recognized center for minimal access surgical training.

IPOM inguinal hernia surgery is a minimally invasive procedure in which a specially designed mesh is placed inside the abdominal cavity to reinforce the weakened hernia defect. The surgery is usually performed under general anesthesia using laparoscopic instruments inserted through small keyhole incisions of about 0.5–1 cm. During the procedure, the hernia contents are pushed back into the abdomen, and an intraperitoneal mesh is fixed using tackers or sutures to prevent recurrence. Patients typically experience minimal tissue trauma and can often be discharged the next day because there are no large cuts or stitches.

The IPOM technique has gained popularity due to its technical simplicity and shorter operating time compared to other laparoscopic hernia repairs such as TAPP (Transabdominal Preperitoneal) and TEP (Totally Extraperitoneal). Studies suggest that IPOM can be safe and effective, especially in recurrent or bilateral hernias or when performed along with other laparoscopic procedures. Recovery is usually quick, with many patients returning to normal activity within days to a couple of weeks.

From a surgical perspective, the success of IPOM repair depends on proper mesh placement, adequate overlap over the defect (usually about 5 cm or more), and secure fixation to the abdominal wall. Modern meshes are designed to integrate well with the abdominal wall while preventing adhesions on the visceral side. When performed correctly, the technique can reduce wound complications, postoperative pain, and hospital stay duration compared to traditional approaches.

Research studies and clinical experiences have shown encouraging outcomes. Many patients undergoing laparoscopic IPOM repair report early return to work, minimal postoperative pain, and low recurrence rates. Some studies also suggest that newer fixation methods like fibrin glue may further reduce pain and improve recovery time.

At World Laparoscopy Hospital, Dr. R. K. Mishra emphasizes structured surgical training, standardized technique, and patient safety. His teaching focuses on careful laparoscopic dissection, correct mesh selection, and precise fixation to ensure long-term success. Through training programs, live surgical demonstrations, and educational videos, surgeons worldwide learn advanced laparoscopic hernia repair techniques.

In conclusion, IPOM inguinal hernia surgery represents an important advancement in minimally invasive hernia management. With benefits such as smaller incisions, faster recovery, and good clinical outcomes, it is becoming an important option in selected patients. Under expert surgeons like Dr. R. K. Mishra at World Laparoscopy Hospital, this technique continues to evolve and contribute to the global improvement of laparoscopic hernia surgery standards.
