This video demonstrate Laparoscopic inguinal hernia repair originated in the early 1990s as laparoscopy gained a foothold in general surgery. ... Inguinal hernias account for 75% of all abdominal wall hernias, and with a lifetime risk of 27% in men and 3% in women.

Transabdominal preperitoneal (TAPP) laparoscopic hernia surgery is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to repair a hernia in the groin area. Here is an overview of the procedure:

Anesthesia: The patient will be placed under general anesthesia.

Port placement: Several small incisions will be made in the abdomen to allow access for the laparoscope and other instruments. Typically, three to four ports will be placed.

Creation of preperitoneal space: The laparoscope will be inserted through one of the incisions to allow the surgeon to view the hernia. The peritoneum will be opened, and the preperitoneal space will be created.

Reduction of hernia sac: The hernia sac will be reduced (pushed back into the abdomen) using specialized instruments.

Placement of mesh: A mesh patch will be placed over the hernia defect and secured in place using sutures, tacks, or glue.

Closure of incisions: The incisions will be closed with sutures or surgical glue.

Recovery: The patient will be monitored in the recovery room until they wake up from anesthesia, and then will be transferred to a regular hospital room. They may experience mild pain or discomfort, which can be managed with medication.

TAPP laparoscopic hernia surgery is generally associated with less postoperative pain, shorter hospital stays, and quicker recovery times compared to traditional open surgery. It also results in less scarring and fewer complications overall. However, as with any surgical procedure, there are potential risks and complications, such as bleeding, infection, and injury to surrounding organs. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of TAPP laparoscopic hernia surgery with your healthcare provider to determine if it is the best option for you.

This video succinctly illustrates the development of Laparoscopic Inguinal Hernia Repair, a significant advancement in the 1990s. Inguinal hernias, a common issue with high lifetime risk, primarily affect men. The Transabdominal Preperitoneal (TAPP) laparoscopic surgery showcased here offers a minimally invasive solution for groin hernia repair, making it a valuable educational resource.
