Uganda: A Land of Great Civilization and Rich History
Understanding the cultural and historical roots of our trainees is essential in building meaningful educational partnerships.
Uganda, widely known as the “Pearl of Africa,” possesses a rich heritage shaped over centuries. The Buganda Kingdom—after which the country is named—emerged as a dominant power around Lake Victoria in the 18th century. Alongside Buganda, kingdoms such as Bunyoro, Ankole, and Toro played foundational roles in shaping Uganda’s identity and governance.
One of the most profound chapters in Ugandan history is the story of the Buganda Martyrs. In the late 19th century, during a time of religious transformation and political tension, 22 Christian converts were executed for refusing to renounce their faith under the reign of King Mwanga II. Their courage and conviction are commemorated annually on June 3rd, symbolizing resilience, faith, and moral strength.
Uganda’s historical landscape has been shaped by migrations of Bantu- and Luo-speaking communities, interactions with Arab traders during the 19th century, and the arrival of European explorers such as John Hanning Speke, who visited in 1862 while searching for the source of the Nile. Together, these influences forged a nation rich in diversity, endurance, and ambition.
A Proud History of Collaboration and Growth in Surgical Care
World Laparoscopy Hospital has maintained a long-standing relationship with the medical community from Uganda. Since the early 2000s, our faculty and alumni have contributed meaningfully to the advancement of minimal access surgery across the country. Notably, in 2001, key milestones in minimally invasive surgery were achieved at Gulu Independent Hospital with contributions linked to our expert training.
Our Ugandan alumni include respected pioneers such as Dr. Judy Orikiiriza and Dr. Musa Chamane, whose work has significantly expanded the reach and acceptance of laparoscopic surgery in Uganda. Their success highlights the immense potential of Ugandan surgeons to achieve global standards through structured, high-quality training.

The greatest lesson I learned at WLH was the art of surgical safety. In the world of laparoscopy, precision is everything. As a Ugandan doctor, I appreciated how the instructors emphasized complication management alongside surgical technique. We practiced until the instruments felt like extensions of our own fingers. I am leaving with a deep understanding of ergonomics and a commitment to bringing these safe, modern standards back to my surgical theater at home.

Efficiency is key in surgery, and the training at WLH is the definition of efficient. I came from Uganda seeking to sharpen my surgical edge. What I found was a world-class facility that prioritizes practical skill over dry theory. The live surgery sessions were a highlight, allowing me to see the masters at work. I am now equipped with the latest techniques in minimal access surgery, ready to make a significant impact on Ugandan healthcare.
