In this episode of Doctor's Talk we discuss with Dr. R K Mishra about Hernia.

A hernia is a defect in the abdominal wall through which internal organs protrude. A hernia can occur in anyone of any gender or age group. Sometimes even in newborns a hernia is detected called Congenital Hernia. More than 1 million (10 lakh) cases of hernia are observed in India every year. It can be treated by Open surgery or Laparoscopy but the laparoscopic procedure provides many advantages compared to traditional open surgery.

What is Hernia? Its Causes and Treatment Using Laparoscopy

A Hernia is a common medical condition that occurs when an internal organ or tissue pushes through a weak spot in the surrounding muscle or connective tissue. It most often develops in the abdominal wall, allowing parts of the intestine or fatty tissue to protrude outward. Hernias can cause discomfort, swelling, and sometimes pain, especially during activities such as lifting heavy objects, coughing, or bending.

Causes of Hernia

Hernias generally occur due to a combination of muscle weakness and strain. Some people are born with weak abdominal muscles, while others develop weakness over time. Several factors can increase the risk of developing a hernia, including:

  • Heavy lifting without proper support

  • Chronic coughing or sneezing

  • Obesity, which increases pressure on the abdominal wall

  • Pregnancy, due to increased abdominal pressure

  • Constipation, leading to excessive straining during bowel movements

  • Previous abdominal surgery, which may weaken the surgical area

Common types include inguinal hernia (groin area), umbilical hernia (near the navel), incisional hernia (at a surgical scar), and femoral hernia.

Symptoms of Hernia

The symptoms may vary depending on the type and size of the hernia. The most common signs include:

  • A visible bulge in the abdomen or groin

  • Pain or discomfort, especially when lifting or coughing

  • Burning or aching sensation at the site

  • Heaviness or pressure in the abdomen

If a hernia becomes strangulated, meaning the blood supply to the trapped tissue is cut off, it can become a medical emergency requiring immediate treatment.

Treatment of Hernia Using Laparoscopy

One of the most advanced and effective treatments for hernia is Laparoscopic Hernia Repair, a minimally invasive surgical technique performed under general anesthesia.

In Laparoscopic Surgery, the surgeon makes a few small incisions in the abdomen and inserts a thin instrument called a Laparoscope, which is equipped with a camera and light. This camera displays images on a monitor, allowing the surgeon to repair the hernia with precision. A surgical mesh is usually placed to strengthen the weak abdominal wall and prevent recurrence.

Advantages of Laparoscopic Hernia Surgery

Laparoscopic treatment offers several benefits compared to traditional open surgery, including:

  • Smaller incisions and minimal scarring

  • Less postoperative pain

  • Shorter hospital stay

  • Faster recovery and return to normal activities

  • Lower risk of infection

Conclusion

In conclusion, a hernia is a common condition caused by weakness in the abdominal muscles combined with strain. If left untreated, it can lead to complications. However, modern techniques such as laparoscopic surgery have revolutionized hernia treatment by providing a safe, effective, and minimally invasive solution. Early diagnosis and timely surgical intervention can help patients recover quickly and return to a healthy and active life.
