In this episode of Doctor's Talk we discuss what is an Ovarian Cyst, what are its symptoms and how can we cure it using Laparoscopic measures.

Around 10 million cases of Ovarian Cyst are observed in India every year and is one of the leading complications of the female reproductive system. It can be cured through contraceptive pills or by Laparoscopic Surgery. If left untreated menstrual irregularities, pain during intercourse or irregular bowel movements are some of the symptoms that may occur.

What is Ovarian Cyst and How Can It Be Treated?

An ovarian cyst is a fluid-filled sac that develops on or inside an ovary. The ovaries are small reproductive organs in women that produce eggs and important hormones such as estrogen and progesterone. Ovarian cysts are very common and can occur in women of all ages, especially during the reproductive years. In most cases, these cysts are harmless and disappear on their own without causing any serious health problems.

Types of Ovarian Cysts

There are several types of ovarian cysts. The most common are functional cysts, which develop during the normal menstrual cycle. These include follicular cysts and corpus luteum cysts. Other types include dermoid cysts, cystadenomas, and endometriomas. Functional cysts usually resolve naturally within a few weeks or months, while other types may require medical attention depending on their size and symptoms.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cysts

Many ovarian cysts do not cause noticeable symptoms and are often discovered during routine pelvic examinations or ultrasound scans. However, some women may experience symptoms such as:

  • Pelvic pain or discomfort

  • Bloating or swelling in the abdomen

  • Irregular menstrual cycles

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Frequent urination or pressure on the bladder

In rare cases, a cyst may rupture or twist the ovary (ovarian torsion), which can cause severe pain and requires immediate medical care.

Diagnosis of Ovarian Cysts

Doctors usually diagnose ovarian cysts through a pelvic examination and imaging tests such as ultrasound. In some cases, blood tests or additional imaging like CT scan or MRI may be recommended to determine the type of cyst and rule out serious conditions.

Treatment of Ovarian Cysts

The treatment of ovarian cysts depends on several factors including the patient’s age, the size and type of the cyst, and the symptoms experienced.

  1. Observation and Monitoring
If the cyst is small and does not cause symptoms, doctors may simply monitor it over time with regular ultrasounds to see if it disappears naturally.

  2. Medication
Hormonal medications such as birth control pills may be prescribed to regulate the menstrual cycle and prevent the formation of new cysts.

  3. Surgical Treatment
If the cyst is large, persistent, or causing severe symptoms, surgical removal may be necessary. Minimally invasive procedures such as laparoscopic surgery are commonly used to remove cysts while preserving the ovary whenever possible.

Prevention and Care

Although ovarian cysts cannot always be prevented, regular gynecological check-ups can help detect them early. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, monitoring menstrual changes, and seeking medical advice when experiencing persistent pelvic pain are important steps in protecting reproductive health.

Conclusion

Ovarian cysts are a common condition that many women experience at some point in their lives. While most cysts are benign and resolve on their own, some may require medical treatment or surgical intervention. Early diagnosis and proper medical care are essential to ensure effective treatment and prevent complications. With modern medical advancements and minimally invasive surgical techniques, ovarian cysts can be treated safely, allowing women to maintain their reproductive health and overall well-being.
