|I am 40 year old male. I have been having acidity issues like heartburn since long back but it was occasional. Now for the last 2 years it has become severe. I have frequent throat inflammation, cough in the night and gastric reflex. It is ok with antacid pills but when I stop them it comes back. Right now I take Nexium 40 mg daily for the last one year though with frequent gap. Can I go for Nissen fundoplication surgery, is it effective?|

|Dear MK Mini
Before going to the fundoplication surgery you should get one esophageal manometry and dual probe ambulatory 24 hour pH monitoring test. Esophageal pH monitoring is the current gold standard for diagnosis of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It provides direct physiologic measurement of acid in the esophagus and is the most objective method to document reflux disease, assess the severity of the disease and monitor the response of the disease to medical or surgical treatment. It can also be used in diagnosing laryngopharyngeal reflux.
