|My fasting blood sugar level after 12 hours fastig at morning usually comes 134mg/dl,137mg/dl,138mg/dl on different occassions, and through now It's my job to feel severe hunger. But after five hours of taking breakfast it usually comes 84mg/dl,90mg/dl,93mg/dl and during this time around I additionally have the same condition of hunger with xerostomia.I'm on METFORMIN 500mg(Two times a day)since August 2010.The dose was also increased thrice every day,but no change in symptoms. My real question is that why the fasting values are high than normal and also on same occassion it might be within normal range despite using a breakfast? If the current dose of METFORMIN is not working well OR there must add another antidiabetic drug?if that's the case, which may work in the prevailing condition? Please also state Whether METFORMIN may cause diabetic hunger?|

Dr M.K. Gupta
In our opinion your antidiabetic medicine Metformin is doing fine.
Metformin is definitely an oral diabetes medicine that can help control blood sugar levels. Metformin is perfect for people with type 2 (non-insulin-dependent) diabetes.
Metformin may also be utilized in combination with insulin or other medications, but it is not for the treatment of your body. Metformin may also be used for purposes unlisted in this medication guide. Take metformin just as prescribed by your doctor. Do not take in larger or smaller amounts or for more than recommended. Follow the directions in your prescription label. Your physician may occasionally change your dose to successfully obtain the best results.
Take metformin with a meal, unless your physician lets you know otherwise. Some types of metformin are taken only one time daily using the dinner. Follow your doctor's instructions. Metformin is only a part of an entire program of treatment that also includes diet, exercise, and weight control. It is important to use this medicine regularly to find the most benefit.
Get a prescription refilled prior to runing out of drugs completely. Do not crush, chew, or break an extended-release metformin tablet. Swallow the pill whole. Breaking the pill may cause too much of the drug to be released previously. Your blood sugar levels will have to be checked often, and you may need other blood tests at the doctor office. Visit your doctor regularly.
Check your blood sugar levels carefully during a time of stress or illness, if you travel, do more exercise than normal, drink alcohol, or skip meals.
This stuff can impact your blood sugar levels and your dose needs may also change. Your physician might want you to definitely quit taking metformin for any small amount of time should you become ill, possess a fever or infection, or if you have surgery or a medical emergency.
Ask your doctor how you can adjust your metformin dose if needed. Do not change your medication dose or schedule without your doctor's advice. Your physician may have you are taking extra vitamin B12 when you are taking metformin.
Take just the amount of vitamin B12 that the doctor has prescribed. Store metformin at room temperature away from moisture, heat, and lightweight. Go ahead and take missed dose as soon as you remember (be sure to take the medicine with food). Skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose.
Do not take extra medicine to make in the missed dose. Avoid alcohol consumption. It lowers blood sugar levels and could improve your risk of lactic acidosis while taking metformin.
