Dear Mr Sridhar

If your father has the problem with the gallbladder stone it ought to be removed. In many from the popullation bases studies it is confirmed that gallstones are an important risk factor for all three subsites of biliary cancer, specially when complicated by chronic cholecystitis.

The most common risk factor for gallbladder cancer is gallstones, that are present in 75%-90% of gallbladder cancer cases

The size of the gallstones plays a role in the chance of developing of gallbladder cancer. Gallbladders containing gallstones that are more than 3 cm in diameter have a 10-fold and the higher chances for developing malignancy compared to those containing gallstones which are 1 cm across. Causality is difficult to determine, but other chronic inflammatory conditions, such as cholecystoenteric fistula, primary sclerosing cholangitis, pancreaticobiliary maljunction, and chronic infection with Salmonella typhi, are also associated with an increased risk of gallbladder cancer.

Therefore we will advice you to obtain the gallbladder removed for your father.

With regards

M C Gupta
