My 4 year old has suffered with severe constipation since birth. When she was born she did not not pass her meconium a doctor had to help get it out of her after 1 and a half days. She was vomiting bright green bile and did not feed for 8 days without being sick. She had one X-ray saying she had a twisted bowel and also they suspected sepsis. Since then she suffers really bad it can be 3 weeks till she passes a stool, she will be in a lot of pain and sit with her knees to get chest bright red and swearing and screaming. She suffers really bad with leakages. Also she has had problems with water infections. Yesterday I was told she had a severe water infection due to blockages in her bowel. We have tried 3 different laxatives nothing has worked and also syrup of figs. We are awaiting biopsy results for short segment HD. Do you think it's possible she may have it?

DearSanjana
She must be suffering from the intestinal obstruction or sub sacute intestinal obstruction. intestinal obstruction is a mechanical or functional obstruction of the intestines, preventing the normal transit of the products of digestion. It can occur at any level distal to the duodenum of the small intestine. It can be a medical emergency so i suggest you consult a pediatric surgeon immediately.

You can send us the biopsy report. Yes it is possible that she may be suffering from the Hirschsprung Disease. Hirschsprung disease is a developmental disorder characterised by absence of ganglia in the distal colon, resulting in a functional obstruction. Most of the cases are diagnosed in the new born period. It should be consider in any newborn that fails to pass meconium within 24-48 hours of birth. Once the condition has been diagnosed, treatment focuses on removing or bypassing the section of the intestine that lacks nerves and replacing it with normal bowel tissue. Minimal invasive technique can be used for the stable child.
