Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, (PCOS) is a abnormal condition affecting five to ten percent of all women in their childbearing yearing age group.
Sometimes PCOS is treated with the drug Metformin which is actually antidiabetic medicine, or Glucophage, which is used in the treatment of Type 2 Diabetes. What this does for a woman with PCOS is similar to what it does for the diabetic patient,; it will affect what the body does with insulin and decrease the male hormone (Testerone), therefore helping the PCOS patient in the regulation of ovulation.
If the medical management is not helping you then ovarian drilling is good option. In this surgery electrosurgical needle punctures the ovary 4 to 10 times. This treatment results in a dramatic lowering of male hormones secreation from ovary within days and is often performed in women who have polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
Few studies have shown that up to 80 percent of patients will benefit from ovarian drilling. Many women who fail to ovulate with clomiphene or Metformin therapy will respond when these same medications are reintroduced to the system after surgery of ovarian drilling.
You have asked about side effects. Although side effects are rare, but may result in adhesion formation or ovarian failure if there are complications during the procedure.
These side effects are more common if surgeon is inexperienced.
