Dear Mauva

Varicose veins are abnormal, dilated arteries caused by weakening within the vessel wall. They may appear as swollen, twisted clusters of blue or purple veins and therefore are sometimes encompassed by thin red capillaries referred to as spider veins (number of small blood vessels located near to the surface of the skin).

Spider or varicose veins can also be called venous telengiectasias. Varicose and spider veins can be displayed anywhere, but many often show up on the legs as well as in the pelvic area. Most varicose veins develop close to the skin surface. Deeper varicose veins may cause the skin above these to swell, become darker or hard. In females, symptoms may be worse during menstruation or pregnancy.

Aside from being very unsightly these veins can be quite painful and tender. The legs may feel very heavy particularly right at the end during the day. Sometimes the spider veins may become hard, red and tender and could develop some blood clots. This is known as thrombophlebitis.

For those who have symptoms of thrombophlebitis of your spider veins while pregnant then you definitely should seek urgent medical advice. It is crucial to place your legs up during menses, as it gives your veins a rest and releases the pressure that's in it. You should try to make sure that you go into a healthy weight and you eat correctly. The good news with varicose veins is they usually disappear after the menses. While you are still coping with the spider veins, it is best to wear support hose, to exercise often and to avoid standing for a long time.

With regards
