I am getting frequent raised heartbeats at night with the Hiatus Hernia condition, and have read that this can over time weaken the heart. The Medical advice that I have recieved to date is to take Nexium ongoing, and that surgery is only an avenue of last resort. I would appreciate your advice. Kind Regards, David Carthy |

Dear David Carthy In our opinion you should consider surgery if medical treatment is worrying you. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most common long term distressing gastrointestinal disorders today with a prevalence of 360/100,000 people. For the majority of patients this is a self limited condition that may be improved with changes in lifestyle or medical therapy. Approximately 25% of patients with GERD will develop progressive disease that does not respond to simple therapy. Some of these patients may benefit from an anti reflux procedure like fundoplication. Please first consult any good gastroenterologist then he will decide which treatment will be good for you. With regards Sadhana |
