Nerve entrapement while hernia surgery
Discussion in 'All Categories' started by gaurav - Jun 2nd, 2012 11:27 pm.
Hi Doctor,

I am really afraid of complications of post bilateral ingunal hernia operation. I heard that they use staples to put the mesh and sometimes the nerve is entrapped also the staples destroy the blood vessel.

Please advise.

Dear Gaurav

You are correct that there are some coplications of Laparoscopic Hernia repair. Nerve injury has a reported incidence of 2% during laparoscopic hernia repair. These injuries usually involve the femoral branch of the genitofemoral nerve and the lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh.

Recently, in an effort to decrease the size of the port sites, surgeons have been using 5-mm tacking devices known as tacker from autosuture. These tacking implants devices penetrate tissue more deeply and in so doing may injure nerves not classically at risk, such as the ilioinguinal and the iliohypogastric.

We have started using fibrin glue to fix the mesh and now these complications are not their. If surgeon will take care of anatomy of triangle of doom and triangle of pain then vessel injury and nerve entrapment can be minimized.

With regards
