my daughter (nearly 15 years old) diagnosed having bilateral pheochromosytoma. Is it possible to do laparoscopic bilateral partial adrenalectomy (cortical sparing) for pheochromosytoma? Can the surgeon leave the cortex to undisturb the other function of hormones? How long she has to stay in hospital, and how much is the cost of the surgery? Waiting for your reply soon

Dear Muskan

Bilateral Laparoscopic partial adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma is safe and technically feasible. During partial resection intraoperative ultrasonography is helpful to accurately plan resection of the tumor. If tumor location permits, the main adrenal vein should be preserved to ensure adequate vascularity for the adrenal remnant. Partial adrenalectomy has to be considered for bilateral adrenal tumors.

In a specialized center with experienced laparoscopic surgeons, laparoscopic partial adrenalectomy for pheochromocytoma is feasible even after previous open surgery on the ipsilateral adrenal gland. Adrenal-sparing surgery is indicated in hereditary syndromes such as VHL and MEN II to avoid the problems of life-long steroid replacement. Recurrences have to be expected, but further surgery may be less difficult by the previous laparoscopic approach.

With regards
