My father, who is 68 years old, suffers from gastric carcinoma. I want to know if it is possible to perform laparoscopic gastrectomy surgery and what are the advantages of laparoscopic gastrectomy over conventional open gastrectomy and what are the chances of recurrence in laparoscopic surgery for gastric cancer.

Dear Kumkum Khanna
It is possible to do laparoscopic or Robotic surgery for Gastric Carcinoma in early stages of the disease. Both Laparoscopic and robotic surgery typically results in less harm to organs and surrounding tissues. laparoscopic surgery is as effective as conventional open surgery and leads to fewer complications, less postoperative pain, and shorter hospital stay. The prognosis and recurrence of any cancer depends upon the histopathological report, stage of the disease, any lymph nodes involvement and distnat metastasis.
