Dear Rajini Hemorrhoids are swollen veins inside or outside the anus. They may be caused by increased pressure, such as straining when having a bowel movement or pregnancy. Hemorrhoids can cause pain, bleeding, clots, and itching. Stapled hemorrhoidectomy, also referred to as stapled hemorrhoidopexy, can be a minimal access surgical procedure that requires the removing of abnormally enlarged hemorrhoidal tissue, as well as the repositioning with the remaining hemorrhoidal tissue to its normal anatomic position. Severe installments of hemorrhoidal prolapse will normally require surgery. Newer surgeries include stapled transanal rectal resection (STARR) and procedure for prolapse and hemorrhoids (PPH). PPH employs a unique circular stapler which reduces the degree of prolapse by excising a circumferential strip of mucosa from the proximal anal canal. This has the effect of pulling the hemorrhoidal cushions back up into their normal anatomical position. Usually the patient will be under general anesthetic. Many cases have been successfully performed under local or regional anesthesia and the procedure is suited to day case treatment. The surgical options for the treatment of hemorrhoids are many; and even though the majority of surgical techniques are based on the ligation and excision principles, newer techniques are designed to minimize tissue dissection with the aim of reducing postoperative pain and bleeding.
