Hello, I would like to know of the probabilities for a case for my mother-in-law. Here is a brief history from the reports we have in our hand right now: Patients sex : Female Patient's Age: 57 As per report: 1. A well Defined cystic lesion is seen in tail region of pancreas with minimally enhancing walls measuring about 6 x 5.5 x 5.5 cm 2. Pancreatic duct not Dilated. 3. No Calcification or Solid Mural Nodule seen. 4. Rest of the pancreatic parenchyma is normal. 5. No Focal Lesion is seen. a> Looking at this detail, is it possible for you to tell if this is a case of a malignant cyst? b> If you think it is not, what is the likelihood of this case proceeding towards malignancy ? c> Our doctor in Kolkata has advised an open surgery to remove the cyst. Is this possible laparoscopically ? d> If laparoscopically possible could you please let me know what would be the approximate total cost to undergo this surgery, including hospital stay and tests required ? e> As our doctor in Kolkata will not do it laparoscopically, would you be able to refer us to someone who can do this laparoscopically ? If this is outside Kolkata, then we would need to know of a follow up doctor in Kolkata before taking a decision, as the patient is growing old, and it would be increasingly hard for her to travel out of Kolkata. Would you be able to provide this information ? Do let me know if you need any more detail/s from our side. Thanks, Anindya. |

Dear Anindya Pancreatic cysts are generally develop due to localized collections of pancreatic fluid that has leaked out of the pancreatic duct and developed into a local swelling behind the stomach. The pseudocyst may give rise to pain, nausea and blockage of the stomach or the duodenum. At WLH we have developed a laparoscopic procedure for treatment of pancreatic cysts. In the laparoscopic surgical procedure a connection is created between the cyst and an adjacent gastrointestinal organ to which the cyst is adherent to such as the stomach. This connection allows the cyst to drain into the stomach. Since in many patients the cyst is formed by continuous leakage of pancreatic juice into the cyst the connection allows the pancreatic juices to drain into the intestine through the connection. Patients recover rapidly from this procedure usually discharged home on the second day post-operatively. At our hospital this surgery by laparoscopic method will cost you 2,75,000 rupees only. With regards Sadhana |
