my son's fiance just had her right ovary surgically removed following severe pain and necrosis found. She is very frightened that this may happen to her left ovary leaving her infertile. She had a hx of a large cyst in the same ovary 10 years ago and a cyst was determined to be the cause of this tortion as well. What is the likelihood of ovary tortion occurring in the other ovary after it happening in one? Is there any way of preventing it from occurring again (e.g. birth control pills?). The hospital has been unhelpful with her concerns thus I have been searching on line for answers. We would appreciate any help you can offer. Many thanks! |

Dear Shantil Erika It's really sad that one of the ovary of the young lady had to be removed because of the torsion. As regards the left ovary torsion can occur if any cyst develops there. Sometimes Oopheropexy and plication of the ovarian ligament is done in viable torted ovary after derotation. As such nothing is required to be done except for early marriage and conception. The best age for child bearing is between 21 to 25 years. Thanks With Regards Dr J S Chowhan |
