Dr M.K. Gupta
You have asked about infertility. Infertility means you cannot create a baby (conceive).
Infertility is grouped into two categories:
Primary infertility refers to couples who have not conceive after at least 1 year of unprotected sex (intercourse).
Secondary infertility describes couples who've been pregnant at least one time, but never again.
Causes, incidence, and risk factors
An array of emotional and physical factors can cause infertility. Infertility may be due to problems in the woman, man, or both.
Female infertility may occur when:
A fertilized egg or embryo doesn't survive once it sticks towards the lining from the womb (uterus)
The fertilized egg doesn't attach to the lining of the uterus
The eggs cannot move from the ovaries to the womb
The ovaries have problems producing eggs
Female infertility may be caused by:
Autoimmune disorders, for example antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)
Cancer or tumor
Growths (such as fibroids or polyps) within the uterus and cervix
Birth defects that affect the reproductive tract
Eating disorders or poor nutrition
Use of certain medications, including chemotherapy drugs
Drinking an excessive amount of alcohol
Ovarian cysts and pcos (PCOS)
Pelvic infection or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
Scarring from sexually transmitted infection or endometriosis
Too little or too much hormones
Male infertility may be due to:
A reduction in sperm fertility
Sperm being blocked from being released
Sperm that do not work properly
Male infertility can be caused by:
Being in high heat for prolonged periods
Heavy use of alcohol, marijuana, or cocaine
Too little or an excessive amount of hormones
Cancer treatments, including chemotherapy and radiation
Scarring from sexually transmitted diseases, injury, or surgery
Use of certain drugs, such as cimetidine, spironolactone, and nitrofurantoin
In healthy couples under age 30 who have sex regularly, the risk of conceiving a child is all about 25 - 30% per month.
A ladies peak fertility occurs in her early 20s. After age 35 (and especially 40), the chances that a woman could possibly get pregnant drops considerably.
The primary symptom of infertility may be the wherewithal to become pregnant. Specific symptoms rely on what is causing the infertility.
Infertility can cause many painful emotions in a single or each partner.
Signs and tests
When you should seek strategy to infertility depends on how old you are. It is recommended that women under 30 should generally attempt to conceive by themselves for 12 months before seeking testing.
Infertility testing involves an entire health background and physical study of each partner.
Blood and imaging tests will be done. In women, this may include:
Blood tests to check hormone levels, including progesterone and follicle stimulating hormone
Checking body temperature very first thing each morning to check if the ovaries are releasing eggs
FSH and clomid challenge test
Luteinizing hormone urine test (ovulation prediction)
Thyroid function tests
Tests in males may include:
Testicular biopsy (rarely done)
Treatment depends upon the cause of infertility. It may involve:
Education and counseling
Fertility treatments for example intrauterine insemination (IUI) as well as in vitro fertilization (IVF)
Medicines to deal with infections and clotting disorders
Medicines that help the girl grow and release eggs from the ovaries
You should recognize and discuss the emotional impact that infertility is wearing you and your partner, and to seek medical health advice out of your health care provider.
You can increase your chances of becoming pregnant each month with sex a minimum of every 3 days before and during ovulation. It's particularly important to do this 72 hours before ovulation begins.
Ovulation occurs a couple of weeks before the next menstrual period (period) starts. If a woman gets her period every 4 weeks, the couple must have sex at least every 3 days between the 10th and 18th day after the period starts.
As much as 1 in 5 couples identified as having infertility eventually be pregnant without treatment.
More than half of couples with infertility become pregnant after treatment, not including advanced techniques such as in vitro fertiliziation (IVF).
Infertility can have a big emotional impact on you and your spouse.
Depression, anxiety, and marriage problems may occur.
