Dear Sir

A hernia is usually a sac formed by the lining of the abdominal cavity (peritoneum). The sac comes via a hole or weak area within the fascia, the strong layer from the abdominal wall that surrounds the muscle.

The types of hernias are based on where they occur:

Femoral hernia looks like a bulge within the upper thigh. This kind is more experienced by women too than men.

Hiatal hernia occurs in top of the area of the stomach.

Incisional hernia can happen through a scar if you have had abdominal surgery in the past.

Inguinal hernia looks like a bulge in the groin. This kind is more common in males than women. The bulge might have to go down in to the scrotum.

Umbilical hernia appears as a bulge around the navel. It occurs when the muscle round the navel doesn't close completely.

Causes, incidence, and risks

Usually, there is no obvious cause of a hernia. Sometimes hernias occur with heavy-lifting. Hernias might be present at birth, however the bulging may not be noticeable until later in life. Some patients could have a family history of hernias.

Hernias are visible in infants and children. This could happen once the lining around the abdominal organs doesn't close properly before birth. About 5 out of 100 children have inguinal hernias (more boys than girls). Some children might not have symptoms until they are adults.

Any activity or medical problem that increases pressure around the abdominal wall tissue and muscles may lead to a hernia, including:

Chronic constipation, straining to have bowel motions

Chronic cough

Cystic fibrosis

Enlarged prostate, straining to urinate

Additional weight

Heavy-lifting

Poor nutrition

Smoking

Overexertion

Undescended testicles
