Dear Karan Ferrell

you have reflux symptoms, you need to aim to slim down if you're overweight. Also, avoid something that causes pressure in your stomach, for example tight clothing and corsets.

If you're a smoker you should aim to stop. If you drink lots of alcohol, it may also help to cut down on alcohol.

If altering your lifestyle does not help, you may need medication such as drugs which suppress acid production.

Rarely, a hiatus hernia causes severe the signs of reflux which are not helped very well with medication. Therefore, a surgical procedure is occasionally advised. During this operation the stomach is defined into the correct position, and the weakened diaphragm round the lower oesophagus is tightened. Other procedures using endoscopy are also available.

During the surgery, the upper part of the stomach (fundus) is gathered, wrapped and sutured (sewn) around the lower part of the esophagus. This allows the lower part of the esophagus to pass through a small tunnel made from the stomach muscle. This will help prevent acid reflux, and strengthen the valve between the esophagus and stomach, which stops acid from backing up into the esophagus as easily.

Laparoscopic fundoplication is most often performed. This surgery involves using a lighted tube that is inserted through a small incision in the abdomen. Recovery time is only a few days in the hospital.
