I am a 44 year old woman having multiple gall stones ranging from 0.7mm-7mm .I have recently undergone an endoscopy since some of the stones descended into the common bile duct causing extreme pain. Also a 10cm stent has been inserted.I have been advised surgery (removal of the gall bladder) within four weeks followed by stent removal.I would like to avoid removal of my gall bladder and want my doctor to remove the gall stones only taking adequate precaution in future to avoid any further gall stone formation through proper diet.I have been warned to remove the stent at the earliest.I am already in the third week post endoscopy.I want to know whether it is possible to get rid of the stones through laproscopy by passing them via the stent (bore size 4mm) . Please advise at the earliest. Is it advisable to give myself a second chance to avoid gall bladder removal.

Dear Sagarika,

You should not try to keep your Gallbladder otherwise you will develop many other complications. Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy is the gold standard for sympotomatic Gall stone diseases. Please get your Gallbladder removed followed by Stent removal.

Hello Doctor,
What happens if gallstones are left untreated?

Dear Karan,
If gallstones lodge in a bile duct and cause a blockage, it eventually results in severe life-threatening complications such as bile duct inflammation and infection, pancreatitis or cholecystitis (an inflammation of gallbladder). In addition, if left untreated, it might increase risk of “gallbladder cancer”.
