In July 2010 I went in the hospital for a hysterectomy afterwhich a couple of hours later I developed an illus. The doctors went in and repaired a bleed and now I only have my left ovary. After a month I had another surgery for a small bowel obstruction due to adhesions. In January of 2011 I had another small bowel obstruction due to abdominal adhesions. In January of 2012 I had another small bowel obstruction due to the adhesions. The recovery
time after each surgery have a longer recovery time. I have been hospitalized several times throughout the years after these surgeries have been performed. My doctor has told me that a covering of Serifilm between the organs to minimize the formation of adhesions. I was just hospitalized about a week ago for chronic abdominal pain. And the MRI showed fluid retention in the pelvic area. Are these adhesions going to keep forming? When will be the best time to have surgery due to the pain from the adhesions? Should I wait until I have a bowel obstruction or before it gets to that point. I really need some help and answers with this debilitating disorder. I can not do normal house work or even go to work. Please help. Any answers?

Dear Green,

Adhesion is just impossible to predict how many time and when it will for. Few persons are very much prone to recurrent adhesion. In our opinion you should avoid surgery if you can because there is no guarantee that after surgery again adhesion will not form.

Adhesion is the tendency of dissimilar particles and or surfaces to cling to one another similar or identical surfaces to cling to one another. The forces that cause adhesion and cohesion can be divided into several types.

Surgery may be done to separate the adhesions. This often allows normal movement of the organ and reduces the symptoms caused by the adhesion. However, the risk for more adhesions increases as the number of surgeries increases.

I had surgery 12/10/10 for stage 2C ovarian cancer: full hysterectomy, biopsies, and appendectomy. I have been in pain unable to walk very far or stand for any period of time. I feel a pulling at the surgical site but the pain in the lower right quadrant causes a great deal of pain and it is even difficult to drive. I am not able to do much at all. I take Lyrica but it does not stop the pain very much and makes me tired so it is difficult to take during the day. I did hear of a cine MRI that can detect adhesions but I am having a difficult time locating a facility that is trained in this imaging for adhesions. Do you know of a medical facility that does this technique. Can they use adhesion barriers for patients that are in remission. Not being able to walk has been debilitating and I don't know if this is the time to consider surgery as I can't take this pain and lack of normal function. So if surgery isn't recommended what can a patient due in my situation to help with the pain and regain the ability to walk normally again?
