A recent Upper GI showed a Hiatia Hernia.Separetly an Ear Doctor did confirm that my vocal cords were irritated by acid reflux and perscribed OmeprazoleDR 40MG taken 1 Hour before meals. My main desire is to determine if my Hiatia Hernia that is allowing acid reflux into my vocal cordes could ALSO be affecting the tubes to my inner ear causing a hearing loss. I do feel my ears clogged and popping occassionally. I do not experience any acid taste. Before investing in hearing aids I wonder if you believe that Acid Reflux can cause BOTH irritated Vocal Cords as well as a HEARING LOSS ?And therefore would surgery to repair the Hiatia Hernia surgery benefit BOTH my sore throat AND improve my hearing?

Dear Aristides Martins Simoes

GERD can cause irritation of vocal cords. Once the acid supports into the larynx, the condition is called reflux laryngitis. Reflux is brought on by weakness within the muscle at the junction of the esophagus with the stomach. Normally, this muscular valve, or sphincter, functions to help keep food and stomach acid motionless upward from the stomach to the esophagus and larynx. This valve opens to allow food in to the stomach and closes to keep the stomach's contents from coming back up. The backward movement of stomach contents (gastric contents) up in to the esophagus is referred to as gastroesophageal reflux.

Additionally, any increase in abdominal pressure, such as obesity, which could push acid back in the stomach in the esophagus, or perhaps a patient with a hernia, will have an increased risk for reflux. When it causes symptoms, it's known as gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD. Once the acid supports into the voice box (larynx), the condition is called reflux laryngitis.

Stomach acid can cause irritation from the lining from the esophagus, larynx, and throat. This may lead to:

erosion of the lining of the esophagus (erosive esophagitis),

narrowing of the esophagus (stricture),

chronic hoarseness,

chronic throat clearing,

difficulty swallowing,

foreign body sensation in the throat,

asthma or cough,

spasms from the vocal cords,

sinusitis, and

growths around the vocal cords (granulomas).

Rarely, reflux can result in cancers from the esophagus or larynx.

With regards

Can removal of hiatal hernia and the use of Omeprazole 40mg twice daily help the issues surrounding the vocal cords? I've had reflux my entire life (42) and have had no trouble singing which is a passion. However, since the hiatal hernia my singing is limited to next to nothing. I am afraid of nodes on my vocal cords. Would the hernia cause this and if surgically fixed would it help?
