Complication of Sleeve Laparoscopic Gastrectomy

Obesity or increased weight is a major health issue that people around the globe are facing. When simple weight loss techniques fail to cure obesity then bariatric surgery comes to rescue. Basically a surgical method is used to insert a gastric band in stomach, or a portion of stomach is removed; the process is known as sleeve Gastrectomy. There is another way of surgically removing the fat. The process involves resecting or re-routing the small intestine to stomach pouch; it is called gastric bypass surgery.  Amongst all these techniques sleeve Laparoscopic Gastrectomy (LSG) is more famous.

What is Sleeve Laparoscopic Gastrectomy?
In Sleeve Gastrectomy technique, almost 70-80% of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a banana or sleeve like structure. The surgery aims at making the stomach to store less food.  Laparoscopic is the modern technique of conduction sleeve Gastrectomy.  It is basically a minimal invasive mechanism and aims at making the Sleeve Gastrectomy more effective. The process requires making of several small incisions in belly rather than one single. Surgeons insert a viewable pipe that carries a tiny camera and instruments. They monitor the internal parts and remove the portions of stomach that are required to do so.
Sleeve Laparoscopic Gastrectomy is less complex surgery than other forms, but still it carries many side effects that can lead to other complications.

Common complications caused be Sleeve Laparoscopic Gastrectomy
This surgical technique can also lead to many complications. The most common side effects involve diarrhoea, dumping syndrome, vomiting, constipation and acid reflux. Apart from this abdominal cramping and nausea are also very common post- LSG surgery conditions. All these issues are not much severe and can be observed in many other cases as well.
There are certain side effects that can be more complex and need special attention.

Staple Site Leakage
Gastric leak at staple site (lining of incision) is a very common post LSG problem. It has two types; one is usually diagnosed after three days of surgery and other gets diagnoses after 8 days. Gastric leakage very often happens due to stomach stretching. In this situation fluids from stomach start flowing into the chest cavity.

Stricture formation
Stricture or stenosis is another complication followed by LSG. It can be acute and diagnosed at very early stages. A way to treat the stricture is by usually rehydrating the body or eating nothing by mouth. Symptoms of stricture are vomiting, nausea, dysphagia and food intolerance; the last one is the strongest symptom of stricture.

Deep-Vein Thrombosis
In very rare case, a deep vein thrombosis can be observed in the patients who undergo LSG; this means that a blood clot is formed in the vein. The complication is life threatening, so must be treated earlier. Usually deep-vein thrombosis doesn’t occur in other types of bariatric surgeries; condition is witnessed only in case of Sleeve Laparoscopic Gastrectomy.

Wound Infection
These infections can be of two types; they can occur at incision site or on surrounding body cavities. Wound infections are not a unique characteristic of Sleeve Laparoscopic Gastrectomy; rather they can occur in any bariatric surgery.

Bleeding
There exists a post-surgery risk of bleeding along the staple line. It appears in the form of gastrointestinal bleed. Usually another Laparoscopic surgery is used to diagnose the bleeding site and then treat it with proper measures. Apart from these complications, bowl obstructions, organ injuries and respiratory problems are few such issues.

Extent of Sleeve Laparoscopic Gastrectomy Complications
Post LSG complications are not much harsh. They carry certain risk level but they are easy to diagnose and cure. It is necessary to remain under the supervision of surgeon after the operation. Reason is that many severe complications start showing up within one or two days and they must be cured in earlier stages.
