This video demonstrates a laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy performed by Dr. R K Mishra at World Laparoscopy Hospital. The laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) or gastric sleeve surgery, involves re-shaping the stomach from a pouch-like shape into a long tube, or “sleeve” Pre-surgery the stomach looks like a kidney bean and can expand to the volume of several liter-size bottles of soda. With staples, the stomach is converted to look like a banana.

This weight loss surgery reduces the capacity and prevents the stomach from expanding significantly. Before sleeve gastrectomy, a regular stomach can hold about six cups of food. The new small stomach can hold about a half cup in volume, resulting in a ‘restrictive’ weight loss of the person. This type of laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy bariatric surgery can be done as a stand-alone procedure or as part of a staged operation. The weight loss is projected to be in the range of 55 to 70 percent of excess body weight. There is no malabsorption created and no foreign body or implant involved. Long-term results are becoming available and the data suggest the weight loss is similar to gastric bypass.

Obesity has become one of the most pressing health concerns globally, contributing to a range of chronic illnesses such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disorders. In response to this, bariatric surgery has emerged as a safe and effective solution for individuals struggling with severe obesity. Among the various surgical options, sleeve gastrectomy has gained immense popularity due to its efficacy, safety, and minimally invasive nature. At the World Laparoscopy Hospital, this procedure is performed with state-of-the-art technology and under the guidance of highly experienced surgeons.

Understanding Sleeve Gastrectomy
Sleeve gastrectomy is a laparoscopic bariatric procedure in which approximately 70–80% of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a narrow, sleeve-shaped stomach. This smaller stomach limits the amount of food intake and reduces hunger by affecting the production of ghrelin, the hunger hormone. Unlike gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy does not involve rerouting the intestines, making it technically simpler while still providing significant weight loss and improvement in obesity-related comorbidities.

Advantages of Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy
The laparoscopic approach used at the World Laparoscopy Hospital offers multiple benefits: smaller incisions, minimal postoperative pain, faster recovery, and reduced risk of infections and complications. Patients can often resume normal activities within a few days, while the hospital provides comprehensive guidance on diet, nutrition, and lifestyle changes to ensure sustainable weight loss. Additionally, sleeve gastrectomy has been shown to improve type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and sleep apnea, enhancing overall quality of life.

Expertise and Facilities at World Laparoscopy Hospital
The World Laparoscopy Hospital in Gurugram, India, is internationally recognized for its advanced laparoscopic and bariatric surgery training programs. The hospital combines cutting-edge equipment with highly skilled surgeons who have extensive experience in minimally invasive procedures. Its minimally invasive nature, combined with the comprehensive care offered at the World Laparoscopy Hospital, makes it a preferred choice for patients seeking effective and sustainable weight loss. By addressing both physical and metabolic aspects of obesity, sleeve gastrectomy not only transforms patients’ bodies but also significantly enhances their overall health and well-being.
