Hello, I had exploratory da vinci surgery for right side abdominal muscle rupture. I went under at 2:00 and my wife was called 15 minutes later to say they didn't find anything and was told I would be sent down in an hour to go home. My insision is high up on the left of my abdomen. Two questions -would 15 minutes be enough time for this surgery given he had to put me to sleep, prep me, fill me w/gas, look around, sew me up and call my wife? And shouldn't my insision be on my right since that was the area in question or is it normal to go in on opposite side? I'm awaiting my follow up appointment with the surgeon. Thank you so much

Hello Tyson

In my opinion the have not done anything. In 15 minute even the intubation, pneumoperitoneum and Docking of da Vinci robot is not possible. Please ask them for surgical video. If they have done robotic surgery within 15 minute, they are the great robotic surgeons of the World.

Thank you for your response. I was able to get the surgical notes and the surgery was actually 7 minutes not 15. I have requested the videotape of the surgery and am awaiting a call back from the Dr. to see if he is willing to give me a copy. What are my options going forth? What can I do if the Dr refuses to give me the videotape and are there any Boards of Medicine I should contact here in the States? How can I get another surgeon and my insurance to go forward and perform a new surgery? Thank you for any help you can give me..its so very appreciated

Hello again, I'm sorry one last question-I have a small 2"incision on the upper left side of my abdomen from this da vinci exploratory surgery. If my muscle tear was on the right side ( which is what they were going in to find and fix) would the right side have been the more logical side to enter the abdomen or would it indeed have been the left side. My PCP couldn't believe there was no other incision esp in the bellybutton area since it was "laparoscopic surgery" I have also since read open surgery would be the better way to go for exploratory surgery any thoughts? My utmost thanks !

Dear Tyson

As in Laparoscopy even in da Vinci Robotic Surgery the optical port is introduced opposite to pathology and so the incision is on left side. Probably the surgeon has entered through the palmer's point. However the target of dissection once identified the he should must introduce the other port. Unless it is Single incision da Vinci surgery the three port is required to perform surgery.

Although we can not blame the surgeon but you can get help of a medicolegal lawyer in your country. If you will search in the google you will get many of them.

you can consult the local medical council also.

With regard

Dr R K Mishra
