my mom has an unknown mass in her spleen since 2010. we have done PET, CT, MRI but its inconclusive. we also did bone marrow testing for lymphoma but its negative. its been 2 years. she is being monitored by her hematologist quarterly and she is fine. she has no symptoms like weight loss or abdominal pain. we would like to have the spleen removed. we want to do laparoscopic (vs traditional knife) surgery. my question is, since the mass is "unknown" is it safe to do a laparoscopic type surgery to remove the spleen? one doctor said that since we dont know if the mass is cancer, if during lap surgery, the spleen burst, cancer cells might spread, so its better to do traditional type surgery. can you give information or professional opinion. thank you so much. |

Dear Meshe In Laparoscopic splenectomy the mass will come together so there should not be anu problem in its removal. Most patients can have a laparoscopic splenectomy. Though the experience of the surgeon is the biggest factor in a successful outcome, the size of the spleen is the most important determinant in deciding whether the spleen can be removed laparoscopically. When the size of the spleen is extremely large, it is difficult to perform the laparoscopic technique. Sometimes, plugging the artery to the spleen right before surgery using special X-ray technology can shrink the spleen to allow the laparoscopic technique. You should obtain a thorough evaluation by our surgeon Dr R K Mishra qualified in laparoscopic spleen removal along with consultation with our surgeon to find out if this technique is appropriate for you.
