Dear Samir

Upper limit to get a substance could be the amount as much as that is considered safe and without probability of adverse effects within the majority of the population.

Toxicity threshold for a substance could be the amount beyond which over-saturation occurs and signs of toxicity manifest.

These values for 25(OH)D are highlighted below:

Toxicity threshold level - 200-250 ng/mL (500-750 nmol/L. Maximum - 100 ng/mL (250 nmol/L)
The massive consist of 25(OH)D maximum as well as threshold value implies a qualification of safety at serum levels up to 100 ng/mL (250 nmol/L), since concentrations twice this amount have not yet ever be associated with toxicity.

In animal models, serum concentrations have reached of up to 400-700 ng/mL (1,000-1750 nmol/L) before toxic effects (severe hypercalcemia) were observed. The 1st indication of vitamin D toxicity is hypercalcuria (excess calcium within the urine) then hypercalcemia (high calcium). The subsequent symptoms may present:

nausea
vomiting
poor appetite
constipation (possibly alternating with diarrhea)
weakness
weight reduction
tingling sensations from the mouth
confusion
heart rhythm abnormalities
The immediate the signs of vitamin D overdose are:

abdominal cramps
nausea
vomiting

Right off the bat is to stop supplementation, then have your physician enable you to decide if you are toxic by testing your 25(OH)D levels. This is actually the same test accustomed to determine vitamin D deficiency.

If your results show a serum 25(OH)D level of 200-250 ng/mL (500-750 nmol/L) or more, you will be toxic. The subsequent measures needs to be taken until vitamin D levels resume normal:

avoidance of sunshine exposure
avoidance of foods and supplements containing vitamin D
restriction of calcium intake
drinking 8 servings of water daily
Once 25(OH)D levels have normalized, sunlight exposure and/or vitamin D supplementation could be resumed, the constant maintenance to not overdo it.

In most cases, vitamin D toxicity may be corrected without lasting problems, provided our bodies has not yet remained in a hypercalcemic state for too long. Hypercalcemia can cause soft tissue calcification, resulting in deposits of calcium crystals from the heart, lungs, and/or kidneys. With prolonged hypercalcemia, permanent damage is possible if calcification is severe enough.
