Dear Latika sehgal

Painful menstrual periods are periods in which a woman has crampy lower abdominal pain, sharp or aching pain which comes and goes, or even lower back pain.

Although some pain during your period is normal, excessive pain isn't. The medical term for painful menstrual periods is dysmenorrhea.
Considerations

Many women have painful periods. Sometimes, the pain sensation causes it to be hard to perform normal household, job, or school-related activities for several days during each menstrual cycle. Painful menstruation is the leading reason for lost time from school and work among women very young and 20s.
Causes

Painful menstrual periods fall into two groups, with respect to the cause:

Primary dysmenorrhea
Secondary dysmenorrhea

Primary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain occurring around the time that menstrual periods first come from otherwise healthy young women. This pain is usually not associated with a specific issues with the uterus or other pelvic organs. Increased activity from the hormone prostaglandin, that is produced in the uterus, is thought to experience a role in this condition.

Secondary dysmenorrhea is menstrual pain that develops later, in females who have had normal periods, and it is often associated with problems in the uterus or other pelvic organs, for example:

Endometriosis
Fibroids
Intrauterine device (IUD) made from copper
Pelvic inflammatory disease
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS)
Sexually transmitted infection
Stress and anxiety

You should talk to your doctor right away if you have:

Increased or foul-smelling vaginal discharge
Fever and pelvic pain
Sudden or severe pain, particularly if your period is much more than a single week late and you've got been sexually active.

Treatment depends upon what is causing your pain. So you need thorough examination for your problem.

With regards
M.K. Gupta
