I am suffering from Gallbladder Polyps. Do I need surgery, or can I just monitor them? If surgery is needed, what type is recommended—laparoscopic or open cholecystectomy? |

Gallbladder polyps are growths that protrude from the inner lining of the gallbladder. Most are benign and do not cause symptoms, but some may carry a risk of malignancy. The management of gallbladder polyps depends on their size, number, appearance on imaging, and associated risk factors. Monitoring vs Surgery: Small polyps (50, history of gallstones, or primary sclerosing cholangitis), have a higher risk of malignancy. Surgical removal is generally recommended. Symptomatic polyps: If polyps cause pain, inflammation, or other gallbladder issues, surgery may be advised regardless of size. Surgical Options: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy: This is the most common and preferred method. It involves removing the gallbladder through small abdominal incisions using a camera and specialized instruments. Advantages include shorter recovery time, less pain, and minimal scarring. Open cholecystectomy: This is reserved for cases where laparoscopic surgery is not feasible due to complications such as severe inflammation, large polyps, or suspicion of gallbladder cancer. It involves a larger incision and longer recovery. In conclusion, if your polyps are small and asymptomatic, careful monitoring with regular ultrasounds may be sufficient. Surgery is recommended for larger, symptomatic, or suspicious polyps. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is generally preferred due to its safety, effectiveness, and quicker recovery.
