A peptic ulcer is an open sore that forms in the lining of the stomach, upper part of the small intestine (duodenum), or sometimes in the lower food pipe. The most common causes are infection with Helicobacter pylori bacteria and long-term use of pain relievers like aspirin, ibuprofen, or other NSAIDs. Stress and spicy food do not directly cause ulcers, but they may worsen symptoms.

Typical symptoms include burning or gnawing pain in the stomach, which may worsen on an empty stomach, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes black or tarry stools if bleeding occurs. It is good that you are alert because untreated ulcers can cause complications like bleeding, perforation, or blockage in the stomach.

For diagnosis, doctors usually suggest an endoscopy, stool tests, or a breath test to check for H. pylori.

Treatment usually involves:

Medications:

Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs) like omeprazole, pantoprazole – reduce stomach acid and allow healing.

Antibiotics (if H. pylori is present) – usually a combination of two antibiotics with a PPI.

Antacids or H2 blockers for symptom relief.

Protective medicines like sucralfate that coat the ulcer.

Lifestyle changes:

Avoid painkillers like aspirin/ibuprofen unless prescribed.

Quit smoking and alcohol as they delay healing.

Eat smaller, frequent meals and avoid foods that trigger discomfort (very spicy, oily, or acidic foods).

Reduce stress through yoga, meditation, or relaxation techniques.

Most ulcers heal within a few weeks of proper treatment. However, it is important to complete the full course of medicines as prescribed by your doctor and go for follow-up if symptoms persist. If you experience severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, or black stools, you should seek urgent medical attention.
