I have GERD and my doctor has advised me to undergo Nissen Fundoplication. Why is Nissen Fundoplication done and what are the complications?

Nissen Fundoplication is a surgical procedure performed to treat severe Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) when lifestyle changes and medications fail to control symptoms. In this surgery, the upper part of the stomach (fundus) is wrapped around the lower esophagus and stitched in place. This strengthens the lower esophageal sphincter (LES), preventing stomach acid from flowing back into the esophagus, thereby reducing heartburn, regurgitation, and acid damage.

Your doctor may recommend Nissen Fundoplication if you have:

Persistent GERD symptoms despite medication.

Complications like esophagitis, strictures, or Barrett’s esophagus.

Large hiatal hernia associated with reflux.

Difficulty tolerating long-term acid-suppressing drugs.

Benefits:

Long-term relief from reflux symptoms.

Reduced dependency on medications.

Prevention of acid-related damage to the esophagus.

Possible Complications:
Like any surgery, Nissen Fundoplication has risks. Common side effects include difficulty swallowing (dysphagia) in the initial weeks, bloating, and inability to belch or vomit. Rare but potential complications are:

Gas-bloat syndrome (trapped gas in stomach).

Slippage or loosening of the wrap, causing recurrence of symptoms.

Esophageal or stomach injury during surgery.

Infection, bleeding, or anesthesia-related risks.

Post-surgery care is important for recovery. You may need to follow a soft diet for several weeks, avoid heavy lifting, and gradually return to normal activities. Some patients require dietary adjustments to prevent bloating.

In summary, Nissen Fundoplication can be highly effective for severe GERD but should be considered only after thorough evaluation and when medical therapy fails. A skilled surgeon and proper post-operative care reduce the risk of complications and improve long-term results.
