If you have diabetes, checking your blood sugar (glucose) regularly is very important to manage your condition and avoid complications. The frequency of checking depends on the type of diabetes you have, your treatment plan, and how stable your blood sugar levels are. How Often to Check: Type 1 Diabetes: Usually 3 to 4 times a day (before meals and at bedtime), or as advised by your doctor. Type 2 Diabetes (on insulin): Check 1 to 3 times a day, especially before meals and bedtime. Type 2 Diabetes (not on insulin): You may need to check once daily or a few times a week, depending on your doctor's advice. Always consult your doctor to create a checking schedule that suits your treatment plan. Best Devices to Use: Glucometer (Blood Glucose Meter): This is the most commonly used device. You prick your finger with a lancet and place a drop of blood on a test strip inserted into the device. Easy to use at home. Gives results in seconds. Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM): This is a small sensor placed under the skin that checks glucose levels continuously. Good for people with frequent fluctuations. Expensive but very useful if recommended by your doctor. Important Tests: HbA1c Test: Done every 3 months at a lab. It shows your average blood sugar over the last 2-3 months. Target: Usually below 7%, as per your doctor’s recommendation. Tips: Keep a record of your readings. Share your sugar level log with your doctor regularly. Always follow your doctor’s advice on diet, exercise, and medication. |
