breast abscess is a painful, pus-filled lump that forms under the skin of the breast, usually caused by a bacterial infection. It commonly occurs in breastfeeding women (lactational abscess) but can also occur in non-lactating women due to blocked ducts, trauma, or infection. Treatment: Antibiotics Doctors usually prescribe antibiotics to treat the infection. Common options include: Amoxicillin-clavulanate Cefuroxime Clindamycin (especially if allergic to penicillin) Metronidazole (sometimes combined if anaerobic infection is suspected) These antibiotics help clear the infection and prevent it from spreading. Drainage of Abscess If the abscess is large or doesn't improve with antibiotics alone, needle aspiration or surgical drainage may be needed. A small incision is made to drain the pus under local anesthesia. Pain Relief Paracetamol (Acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen is given to reduce pain, swelling, and fever. Possible Side Effects of Common Medicines: Amoxicillin-clavulanate: Diarrhea, nausea, skin rash, yeast infection. Clindamycin: Diarrhea, including risk of Clostridium difficile infection. Metronidazole: Metallic taste, nausea, dizziness, avoid alcohol use. Ibuprofen: Gastric irritation, acidity, rare kidney effects if used long term. Paracetamol: Safe in recommended doses, but overdose may affect the liver. Additional Advice: Continue breastfeeding or milk expression (if lactating) unless advised otherwise. Maintain breast hygiene. Follow up with your doctor for complete resolution. |
