Bedsores, also called pressure ulcers or decubitus ulcers, develop when a person lies in one position for too long, causing poor blood flow and skin damage. They usually appear on the back, hips, buttocks, heels, or elbows. Since your uncle has developed bedsores, timely and proper treatment is very important to prevent infection and promote healing. Relieving Pressure The most important step is to change your uncle’s position every 2 hours. Use soft cushions, air or water mattresses to reduce pressure on affected areas. Cleaning and Dressing The sore should be cleaned gently with saline or mild antiseptic solution. After cleaning, apply a prescribed ointment (such as povidone-iodine or silver sulfadiazine) and cover the wound with a sterile dressing. This helps keep the area moist and promotes healing. Wound Care If the bedsore is deep or infected, a doctor may recommend debridement (removal of dead tissue), which helps the new skin grow. In severe cases, minor surgical procedures might be needed. Antibiotics If there is pus, foul smell, fever, or swelling, it may be infected. In such cases, the doctor may prescribe oral or IV antibiotics. Nutrition Good nutrition is essential. Ensure your uncle gets a high-protein diet, plenty of fluids, and supplements like vitamin C, zinc, and iron, as advised by the doctor. Preventive Measures Keep the skin dry and clean. Use talcum powder to avoid moisture. Avoid friction when moving him in bed. |
