I had my fibroid removed via laparoscopic surgery. What are the possible complications associated with fibroid removal surgery?

After fibroid removal through laparoscopic surgery (laparoscopic myomectomy), recovery is usually smooth, but as per doctors, there are a few possible complications that you should be aware of. Here’s a simple explanation in about 300 words:

Bleeding:
Some bleeding is normal after surgery. However, in rare cases, there might be heavy bleeding during the operation, especially if the fibroids were large or deeply embedded in the uterus. This may occasionally require a blood transfusion.

Infection:
Post-surgical infections can happen, though rare in laparoscopic procedures. Signs of infection include fever, increased pain, redness around incision sites, or foul-smelling vaginal discharge. If any of these occur, inform your doctor immediately.

Injury to nearby organs:
Since the uterus is close to organs like the bladder, intestines, and ureters, there's a small risk of accidental injury during surgery. This is rare but can require further treatment or surgery.

4. Scar tissue (adhesions):
Some patients may develop internal scar tissue after surgery, which can cause pelvic pain or affect fertility in some cases. Doctors often use techniques during laparoscopy to reduce the risk of adhesions.

Delayed recovery or pain:
While recovery is faster in laparoscopy than open surgery, you may still experience fatigue, mild abdominal pain, or bloating for a few weeks.

Uterine rupture in future pregnancy:
If the fibroid was deep in the uterine wall, there’s a small risk of uterine rupture in future pregnancies. Doctors usually monitor such pregnancies closely, and a C-section may be recommended.

Advice:
Take complete rest for at least 1–2 weeks, avoid heavy lifting, follow your doctor’s medications, and attend follow-up appointments. If you experience unusual pain, heavy bleeding, fever, or any abnormal symptoms, consult your doctor right away.

With proper care, most women recover fully and return to normal life without complications.
