I have a problem of hemorrhoids. The doctor has advised me to get surgery. Is there a chance of getting hemorrhoids again after hemorrhoidectomy surgery or not? |

Hemorrhoidectomy is a surgical procedure to remove severe or persistent hemorrhoids, especially when medicines and lifestyle changes don’t provide relief. Since your doctor has advised surgery, it likely means your hemorrhoids are at an advanced stage (Grade 3 or 4), bleeding, painful, or prolapsing. After the surgery, most patients experience significant relief. The hemorrhoids that are removed during the surgery usually do not return. However, new hemorrhoids can develop later, especially if the original causes of hemorrhoids (such as constipation, straining during bowel movements, sitting for long periods, and a low-fiber diet) are not corrected. So yes, there is a small chance that hemorrhoids can come back even after surgery, but not in the same exact spot — it will be a new hemorrhoid formation. The risk of recurrence is low if you follow healthy lifestyle habits. To prevent recurrence after surgery, doctors suggest: Eat a high-fiber diet (vegetables, fruits, whole grains) Drink 8–10 glasses of water daily Avoid straining during bowel movements Never delay the urge to pass stool Use stool softeners if needed (as advised by your doctor) Avoid sitting for too long on the toilet Do regular physical activity (like walking) Also, after the surgery, it’s normal to have pain for a few days, and complete healing may take 2–3 weeks. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully for the best recovery. |
