After a prostatectomy surgery, recovery takes time and varies slightly depending on the type of surgery (open, laparoscopic, or robotic-assisted). However, here are general doctor-advised guidelines in simple language for resuming normal activities: Rest and Initial Recovery (First 1-2 weeks): After surgery, your body needs rest. For the first 1-2 weeks, focus on: Taking light walks at home to improve circulation. Avoiding lifting anything heavier than 5 kg. Keeping your surgical area clean and dry. Managing your catheter (if present) carefully. Returning to Work: If your job is sedentary (like office work), you may return in about 2 to 4 weeks, depending on how you feel. If your job involves physical activity or lifting, wait at least 6 to 8 weeks or until your doctor gives clearance. Exercise and Physical Activity: You can start with gentle walking after a few days. Avoid heavy exercise, gym workouts, cycling, or abdominal exercises for at least 6 weeks. Gradually increase activity based on how your body feels and after discussing with your doctor during follow-up. Se-xual Activity: You may resume se-xual activity usually after 6-8 weeks, depending on recovery and comfort. Some men may experience erectile dysfunction, which can improve over time with medications or therapy. Important Tips: Drink plenty of fluids. Avoid constipation – eat fiber-rich food. Take all prescribed medications regularly. Attend follow-up visits for catheter removal (if any) and to monitor recovery. Always listen to your body and don’t rush. If you experience pain, bleeding, fever, or urinary issues, consult your doctor immediately. |
