Achalasia cardia is a rare condition in which the food pipe (esophagus) is unable to move food properly into the stomach because the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) does not relax. This causes difficulty in swallowing, chest pain, and sometimes vomiting or weight loss.

Your doctor is suggesting a procedure called Laparoscopic Esophagomyotomy (also known as Heller Myotomy), which is the standard and effective treatment for Achalasia. This surgery is done using laparoscopy, which means small cuts are made, and a camera and instruments are inserted to perform the surgery. In this procedure, the tight muscles at the lower end of the esophagus (LES) are cut to allow food to pass easily into the stomach.

Sometimes, the word "Thoracotomy" is used if the surgery is done through the chest. However, with modern techniques, most doctors prefer the laparoscopic (through the abdomen) method because it has:

Less pain

Smaller scars

Faster recovery

Shorter hospital stay

Your doctor may also suggest a partial fundoplication along with the myotomy. This helps prevent acid reflux after the procedure.

This surgery is generally safe and successful for most patients. However, as with any surgery, there are risks like bleeding, infection, or acid reflux. But with an experienced surgeon, complications are rare.

If your symptoms are severe and medicines or balloon dilatation are not giving you relief, then laparoscopic esophagomyotomy is a good option.

Please discuss the benefits and risks with your surgeon. Also, ask about the experience of the surgical team and post-surgery care.

In simple words – yes, it is a recommended and effective surgery for Achalasia, and laparoscopic method is the modern, safer option.
